November 2009
Dear Parents/Guardians,
A
new influenza virus know as the 2009 H1N1 virus was identified
in the United States in late April 2009. The virus has caused
illness ranging from mild to severe. Many children have contracted
this virus and there have been outbreaks in many schools across the
country. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention
(CDC) Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices has recommended
that children and young adults aged 6 months thru 24 years be
vaccinated against the 2009 H1N1 virus as soon as the vaccine
is available. Other groups recommended to receive the the
first available doses of the vaccine include:
•Pregnant
women
•People
who live with or care for children younger than 6 months of
age
•Health
care and emergency medical services workers
•People
ages 25-64 years with certain health conditions
Vaccination is the best
way to protect your child from this influenza virus. On
Monday, November 30, 2009, the Riley Co. Health Department has
scheduled a school vaccination clinic for USD 384, starting at
12:30 p.m. It will be held in the old gym at the high school. If
the supply of vaccine is inadequate at that time, the clinic
may have to be rescheduled. This clinic is available
for pre-school thru high school students. Several consent forms
and information on the vaccines are included with this letter.
If
you wish to have your child vaccinated at school, Parents/Guardians
will need to completely fill out and sign the 2009 H1N1 Influenza
Vaccine Consent Form and the HIPAA/Privacy Practices
Form and return both forms to your child’s school
by November 24, 2009. Please note Section 4
of the consent form requires a signature as well as Section
3 if your child is going to receive the vaccine. All
returned information will be kept on file at school until the
clinic date. A
copy of the health department’s Privacy Policy is available
for viewing on USD 384 website, or a printed copy can be sent
home with students upon request. Please remember that
children can also receive the vaccine at the Riley Co. Health
Department.
Children
9 years of age and younger will need 2 doses of the vaccine spaced
about 4 weeks apart. However, at this time we cannot guarantee
the health dept. will return to the school for the second dose
due to vaccine availability. Parents will be responsible for
securing the 2nd dose for their child. Children
10 years and older will ned one dose of the vaccine. There
will be no cost for this vaccine for all school-aged children
Pre-School thru High School. We are asking that younger,
smaller children who are unable to receive an injection in their
arm, to wear sweatpants the day of the clinic to make it easier
to receive the vaccine in their leg.
Frequently
asked questions and concerns are discussed on the Q
& A page. Any
other questions concerning the vaccine or the clinic, contact
